Impulse - Nassau in the field of tension between the denominations
Until May 13, 2018, the special exhibition "Impulse - Nassau in the field of tension between the denominations" was dedicated to Nassau's contribution to Protestantism.
Impulse - Nassau in the field of tension between the denominations
In the 500th year of the posting of Martin Luther's theses, sam showed the contribution Nassau's princes and citizens made to the spread and consolidation of Protestantism. On a journey through time from the Middle Ages to the modern age, visitors encountered people and events that were or still are of outstanding importance for the history of Protestantism in the region between the Rhine, Main and Westerwald.
Visitors to the sam exhibition were immersed in the religious world of the late Middle Ages and experienced the three lines of the House of Nassau at the time, Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein, Nassau-Weilburg and Nassau-Dillenburg, in their respective approaches to the new religious doctrine.
In the Netherlands, a Nassau, William of Orange, known as "the Silent One", led the War of Independence, which was also a religious war. His brother John VI founded the High School of Herborn, one of the most important Calvinist centers in the old empire.
The unification of both Protestant denominations in the "Nassau Union" in 1817, the year of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation, was a milestone in the modern history of the Protestant faith.
The "Wiesbaden Church Building Program" fulfilled the requirements of Protestant worship for a central building. It soon gained great influence in Protestant church architecture, and the Wiesbaden Ringkirche became a role model.
The Nassau region received numerous impulses from the Reformation and its consequences. However, numerous impulses also emanated from Nassau and had an impact. The exhibition wanted to show this interaction: Nassau in the field of tension between the denominations - an eventful chapter.
Important objects from the Nassau Antiquities Collection are presented
As the Stadtmuseum Foundation also keeps the Nassau Antiquities Collection in its depots, the exhibition, which presents important arts and crafts and fine graphic art, was able to draw almost entirely on its own holdings. Loans came from the Hessian State Library and support was provided by the Hessian Main State Archive in Wiesbaden.
