The Schlossplatz

As the center of the Historic Pentagon, Schlossplatz is surrounded by the former city palace of the Dukes of Nassau, the Old and New Town Halls and the Marktkirche church. The market fountain from 1753 adorns the center of the square. In keeping with its former name, the people of Wiesbaden still call Schlossplatz "Marktplatz" today. The square was already a fortified location in the Middle Ages: a settlement surrounded by walls and gate towers developed around a tower and was granted town rights before 1241. Due to its more than 1200 years of settlement history, the square is of particular historical significance. In the 19th century, Schlossplatz was given a completely new design that encompassed all the stylistic phases of historicism.
