Electromobility in Wiesbaden

Towards a sustainable future

Wiesbaden is actively shaping urban change and is clearly focusing on electromobility. The city has developed a comprehensive concept for the expansion of the charging infrastructure - a crucial building block for the mobility transition.

Strategic planning and participation

The Civil Engineering and Surveying Office, together with the Drees + Sommer specialist office, developed a forward-looking concept (opens in a new tab) based on statistical data and after intensive dialog with local councils, housing associations, companies and retailers. This participatory approach ensures that charging points are installed where they are needed in Wiesbaden. The aim is to provide a comprehensive and efficient charging infrastructure by 2030. Clear technical specifications and a transparent awarding of concessions support this project.

Advantages and visions of electromobility

Electric vehicles are more than just a climate-friendly alternative: they are quiet, low-maintenance and often cheaper to run than combustion engines. Even with the current electricity mix in Germany, they produce around 20 percent fewer greenhouse gases - and that is noticeable.

Wiesbaden is therefore focusing specifically on sustainable mobility. Under the motto "Wiesbaden recharges!", a charging infrastructure is being created that is fit for the future - and for everyday use. The whole thing is being funded by the "Clean Air" immediate action program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (opens in a new tab). The project sponsor is the German Aerospace Center(DLR (opens in a new tab)), supported by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics(Fraunhofer IML (opens in a new tab)).

A central element: the e-mobility hub in the Elsässer Platz parking garage. With 421 charging points for alternating current (AC) and eight fast charging points (DC), which charge up to 80 percent in around 30 minutes, it is one of the largest of its kind.

Current status

Anyone looking for a charging station in Wiesbaden will usually find one nearby. The network is also becoming increasingly dense: the planned number of around 1,680 public charging points by 2030 alone shows the city's commitment to this future-oriented topic. The additional expansion by private providers will significantly increase the total number of charging points once again. Current figures on the charging infrastructure in Wiesbaden and throughout Germany are published by the Federal Network Agency (opens in a new tab).

Outlook for the future: Together for clean mobility

The strategy shows how forward-looking planning, innovative projects and the involvement of local partners are paving the way to a sustainable mobile future. This initiative not only changes the cityscape in a positive way, but also sets clear impulses that are directly visible on site to reduce emissions and increase the quality of life - traceable in the city's geoportal (opens in a new tab).
