Bees, wasps & co

Bees and wasps belong to the Hymenoptera order. With over 100,000 different species, they specialize in a wide variety of habitats worldwide.

A wild bee approaching a flower, it can be seen from the side. The flower is white and yellow, in the background is blue sky.
Bees and wasps can be found almost everywhere on the globe.

Over 500 different bee species live in Germany. The colony-forming honeybee and the furry bumblebees are known to almost everyone. The other wild bees mostly live alone (solitary) or in nest communities.

There are also a large number of solitary species of wasps. Hornets are among the colony-forming wasps. In addition to hornets, there are 12 other native wasp species that form colonies. Only two wasp species are interested in our food.
