The Platte hunting lodge

History

The Platte hunting lodge has existed since the 19th century and can look back on a long history.

"A living monument ...". The Platte hunting lodge was built between 1823 and 1826 and was used as the autumn residence of the ducal family of Nassau during the hunting season. It was a prestigious house in its day.

The wooded hills on the Taunus slopes above Wiesbaden with an unobstructed view of the Rhine Valley were already a princely hunting ground in the 18th century and the preferred residence of the sovereigns.

The size of the hunting grounds with its enormous game population, the imposing castle and the prominent guests who stayed there, including Tsar Alexander II, Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna and Empress Eugenie, soon turned "die Platte" into a center of social life. All the more so as the palace was available to citizens and spa guests for tours and events during the duke's absence.

Destroyed in air raid

During the Second World War, the building was destroyed down to the outer walls in an air raid in 1945. Only the foundation walls and the steps of the house were still recognizable. In the decades that followed, the ruins, which were in danger of collapsing, were left to decay completely.

It was not until 1987 that an initiative, today's "Stiftung Jagdschloss Platte e.V.", took on the castle with the intention of making it usable again. The first restoration work on the ruins began in 1989. Since 1993, it has been used for weddings, parties and other events.

Character of ruins preserved

In 2003, the building was given a modern glass roof made up of four squares, which spans the building and emphasizes the remaining historical structure in the form of an inverted pyramid. The character of the ruins has thus been visually preserved. The combination of old architecture and new elements as well as the glass roof and the viewing platform emphasize the extraordinary character of the castle.

The interior was further extended in the fall of 2006, and the building has been available for events again without restriction since April 2007.

Since then, the castle has enjoyed great popularity as an unusual venue and guests are now increasingly flocking to the building all year round, as a modern climate control system guarantees a pleasant stay at any time of year. The charming viewing platform and the glass roof are a special attribute and allow guests to enjoy the play of the seasons without restriction. Corporate and family celebrations, festive occasions, conferences or presentations find a perfect setting here, leaving plenty of room for creativity and individual design.
