Freudenberg Castle

Freudenberg Castle - a field of experience for the development of the senses and the mind - has been home to the educational center "Gesellschaft Natur & Kunst e.V." since 1994.

As a "field of experience for the development of the senses and thinking", this small castle and its extensive garden attract visitors to the western outskirts of the city. High above Wiesbaden and with a view of the Rhine, you can actually stimulate all your senses at over 100 stations. Whether you watch ice flowers grow in the cold chamber, drink a coffee or eat a snack in the dark room, walk along the barefoot path or crouch down in a singing bowl and feel the sounds all over your body: Schloss Freudenberg will enchant you on many levels.

And the house itself also has its very own vibration - perhaps because it was built as a place of love from the very beginning? A mysterious couple commissioned the construction of this villa at the beginning of the 20th century. He was the Scottish-born painter James Pitcairn-Knowles; she, known only as Yvonne, was the illegitimate daughter of Napoleon III and a lady-in-waiting. After various crises in their lives, both had actually intended to become a monk - or a nun - when they met, fell in love and then had Freudenberg Castle built - as a bastion of love to which they wanted to retreat. And where they also celebrated the odd lavish party.
However, their happiness as a couple only lasted a few years. After frequent changes of ownership, Schloss Freudenberg finally fell into disuse - until Beatrice Dastis Schenk and her husband Matthias fell in love with the place in the early 1990s. At the time, it was anything but charming, the house was run down and the garden was overgrown.

However, the Schenks spent years restoring Freudenberg Castle with a great deal of commitment and help from like-minded people. And transformed it into today's "Field of Experience". Katharina Schenk, daughter of the two founders, now runs Freudenberg Castle together with her husband and brother.

Freudenberg Castle - a field of experience for developing the senses and thinking

Permanent exhibition

The heart of the facility is a permanent exhibition, the "Field of Experience for the Development of the Senses and Thinking". At more than 100 stations, visitors are playfully introduced to natural phenomena such as balance, gravity, light and darkness, sound and resonance. Two of the highlights are the Dark Bar and the Dark Corridor, experiences that no visitor will forget in a hurry.

Café terrace on the south side of the castle

The café terrace on the south side of the castle offers a beautiful view of the park, forest, climbing hill and partner swing. The Dunkel-Bar and the Nacht-Mahl restaurant offer a journey to the senses. Here we eat and drink in complete darkness; when the eye sleeps, the world tastes of us. The pleasures of the palate are experienced through smell, taste, shape and texture. Service in the world of darkness is provided by visually impaired and sighted bartenders. The Dark Bar is part of the Field of Experience and welcomes guests during regular opening hours.

There are regular cultural events in and around the castle in the fields of theater, music, festivals and performance. Current information can be found on the castle website linked below.
