Unveiling of the "City of Europe" signs and invitation to the "Europe competition"
The state capital of Wiesbaden has sent out a clear signal of its European commitment: New "Europastadt" signs greet citizens and visitors at 29 entrances to the city. The signs were ceremoniously unveiled on Monday, March 17, by Lord Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende, Head of European Affairs Maral Koohestanian and Head of Transport Andreas Kowol.
"Europe is an achievement that we must preserve and develop further," emphasizes Lord Mayor Mende. "As a European city, we remain committed to European values. The new city entrance signs make this commitment visible and transport the European idea to all parts of the city."
European Affairs Officer Koohestanian adds: "By putting up the signs, we are also inviting our citizens to consciously think about what Europe means to them and what place it has in their lives."
From April 1 to 30, the European Department is organizing a competition in which Wiesbaden's citizens can win one of the following three prizes: 1st prize: Two Interrail tickets for a trip through Europe; 2nd prize: Two day tickets for adults for Europa-Park in Rust; 3rd prize: Two train tickets of your choice - to Strasbourg or Brussels.
To take part in the competition, creative statements on the personal significance of Europe can be submitted on the website of the City of Wiesbaden (wiesbaden.de/europa) from Tuesday, April 1. More detailed information will also be available there from April 1.
"I am already looking forward to many exciting submissions. Each and every one of us experiences Europe in our own way. With this competition, we want to make precisely these different perspectives visible and show how valuable a European identity can be for all of us," says the Head of European Affairs.
Head of Transport Kowol emphasizes the importance of the signs in the cityscape: "With the 'Europastadt' signs, we are setting a striking accent at the entrances to the city and underlining the European identity of our city. The new town entrance signs are therefore not only a symbol of European values, but also a conscious design decision for the cityscape. My thanks go to the European Department, which coordinated the project, and to the Civil Engineering Department for their active support during implementation."
