Renovation work in Spiegelgasse
A terrace is currently being built in Spiegelgasse to make the location usable for gastronomic, cultural and social events. A new square is to be created in the middle of the city center.
"It will be an inviting meeting place for everyone," says a delighted Mayor Christiane Hinninger. She emphasizes the civic commitment behind the construction project: "Wiesbaden thrives on people who are actively committed to their city."
The square is located in the heart of Wiesbaden, in the immediate vicinity of the oldest historical buildings, the Active Museum of German-Jewish History, the German Language Society, the Pariser Hof Theater and various restaurants. "Outdoor gastronomy brings life to our city, which is why we support such initiatives with a generous approval policy," says Andreas Kowol, Head of Building. "Here on Spiegelgasse, a dull, gray corner is being transformed into an attractive little square. It could become a real gem where citizens will enjoy spending time.
Until now, the area on Spiegelgasse has been used for glass containers, parking and as a storage area for garbage cans from the neighborhood. The plan to change this situation emerged as early as 2023 and the planning office Stilbruch United Designers, which also designed the ice rinks for Luisenplatz (2022 and 2023) and the Bowling Green (2024), developed the idea of making the area usable for gastronomic, cultural and social events together with local residents. This idea was welcomed by the local advisory council, and the mayor's department also supported the project from the outset. Together with the city management, the plans for 2024 were fleshed out and funding was obtained for implementation.
The area is currently fenced off. The construction work that has now begun will continue for a few more weeks until the square can be used in time for the summer. A terrace will cover the entire area, which was previously used as a parking lot, and will be accessible from Spiegelgasse. The area will be furnished and planted with planters. Umbrellas will be installed to provide shade and weather protection.
The project will be implemented as a cooperation between the city or the city management and the neighbors of the square in the sense of a local partnership and will also be used in the future. The area will be open to the public, but will also be used as a cultural and culinary venue. Interactive steles will be used to draw attention to the special significance of the various neighbors.
