Using buses safely: Mobility training for senior citizens
Using the bus easily and safely is often not a matter of course, especially for older people. For this reason, the "Together safely" working group and its members are once again offering mobility training for senior citizens on Thursday, April 24 at 2 pm.
Andreas Kowol, Wiesbaden's Head of Transport and Managing Director of the Prevention Council of the state capital, explains the aims of this campaign: "To allay false fears, inform customers about support options and demonstrate in practical terms how the bus can be used safely and comfortably even with a disability." According to Kowol, people must still be able to participate in social life even if they have limited mobility: "Even those who are no longer quite as fit or rely on aids such as a cane, walker or wheelchair should be able to visit friends or pursue interests outside their own four walls." In some cases, however, it makes sense to familiarize yourself with the services and challenges of public transport for the first time or again.
How do I ride the bus as safely as possible? Will I get trapped if the door suddenly closes and I am still getting on? Will the driver see me if I want to get on at the back? How can rollator and wheelchair users use a bus safely? Explanations, tips and practical exercises, especially on questions like these, are designed to help senior citizens remain mobile for as long as possible.
Participants will have the opportunity on Thursday, April 24,
- at 1.20 pm at the bus stop "Hauptbahnhof A" (near Lili)
or
- at 1.35 p.m. at the "Weimarer Straße" stop (Bierstadt Wolfsfeld)
and
- at 1.50 p.m. at the bus stop "Egerstraße" (Erbenheim)
and then travel together to the event at 2 p.m. (bus stop "Ernst-Galonske-Straße" in the Kastel industrial estate on Petersweg). There, expert staff from ESWE Verkehr GmbH will give tips and there will be an opportunity for practical practice. "Nobody has to miss out on using our buses out of fear or uncertainty. We and our cooperation partners want to provide information about this during this training," emphasizes Klaus Peter Wollny from ESWE Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH.
The mobility training is offered as part of the "MAXimal mobil bleiben - mit Verantwortung" (Max Mobil) campaign by the "Gemeinsam sicher" working group of the Prevention Council of the state capital of Wiesbaden, ESWE Verkehr GmbH and the West Hesse Police Headquarters.
