In memory of Wiesbaden painter and honorary citizen Christa Moering (1916 to 2013), the state capital of Wiesbaden awards a biennial scholarship to support artists. Artists whose place of residence, work or birth is Wiesbaden were able to apply for the scholarship, which was publicly advertised. A total of 27 applications from all areas of the visual arts were received, 25 of which met the guidelines. The six-member jury, chaired by Head of Cultural Affairs Axel Imholz, unanimously selected the painter Margareta Tovar after an in-depth discussion. The scholarship is endowed with 10,000 euros and includes a presentation at the Kunsthaus in the following year.

The jury was made up of Nedret Altintop-Nelson, member of the Schools and Culture Committee, Jörg-Uwe Funk, acting head of the Cultural Office, Dr. Simone Husemann, Catholic Adult Education, Head of Cultural Affairs Axel Imholz, Beatrix Klein from the Women's Museum and Dr. Isolde Schmidt, Fine Arts Officer.

Margareta Tovar was born in Georgsmarienhütte in Lower Saxony in 1949, is a trained graphic artist and studied as a guest student at the University of Osnabrück. She lives and works in Wiesbaden. She has been presenting her work in solo and group exhibitions since the 1990s, most recently at the Bellevue-Saal at the beginning of this year. She has earned a reputation as a consistent, artistically highly independent artist.

The scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2009. It was initially aimed exclusively at female artists and was awarded annually in various cultural fields. Since 2013, visual artists have been able to apply every two years.

About the artist

"You can feel how Tovar wants to bring the line to something new, to raise it to the next level. The result is not a colossus of color or lines, but a downright delicate and sensitive structure consisting of voids and condensations, of expansions, pauses and perpetual movement. The lines move across the canvas, sometimes fleetingly, sometimes submerged, only to emerge again with renewed vigor. This is how the artist sets her paintings in motion, it is a rhythmic and organic flow that characterizes the paintings and gives them a unique, lively atmosphere that radiates throughout the room" (from: Dr. Peter Forster, opening speech 18 January 2018, Kunstverein Bellevue-Saal, Wiesbaden).
