German traffic law is made up of a large number of different laws. The most important traffic laws are the Road Traffic Act (StVG) and, building on this legal basis, the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).

Traffic monitoring measures contribute to improving road safety. Traffic and speed checks are just one part of traffic monitoring. These tasks are carried out by the municipal police and the state police.

The "City Police - Traffic" ensures safety and order in road traffic by performing numerous essential tasks.

The "City Police - Traffic" ensures general traffic monitoring. Among other things, it detects traffic violations and other administrative offenses in stationary and moving traffic (e.g. parking violations, speeding violations, red light violations). It is responsible for the compulsory unstamping of vehicles. It also initiates towing measures for traffic violations and the removal of unauthorized vehicles from public traffic areas. It is responsible for traffic regulations in public traffic areas. Its area of responsibility also includes fire department patrols. It receives reports of malfunctions at parking ticket machines. Last but not least, it is also responsible for monitoring compliance with conditions for the special use of public traffic areas
