Education between the ages of 10 and 16 (Sek I)

After elementary school, secondary level I with its structured school system begins in year 5. Depending on the educational pathway - i.e. whether the pupil attends a Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium or a school of any type (integrated comprehensive school, cooperative comprehensive school, intermediate school) - lower secondary level lasts (as a rule) five (up to year 9) or six years (including year 10).

During this time, the focus is on developing the basic skills acquired in elementary school (reading, writing, arithmetic) and acquiring knowledge and skills in a variety of other subjects, particularly foreign languages and social and natural sciences. In addition, pupils should be prepared for professional life.

At the end of lower secondary level in years 9 and 10, the focus is on the acquisition of educational certificates, i.e. school-leaving qualifications. Obtaining the Hauptschulabschluss can be seen as the minimum goal for lower secondary level, although the vast majority of parents, pupils and teachers today generally aim for a higher educational qualification.
