Forest nature conservation: Nature conservation guideline Stadtwaldt Wiesbaden
The forest in general has a habitat function for a variety of plants and animals. For this reason, near-natural management requires a high and permanent consideration for all floristic and faunistic members of the forest ecosystems.
Forest nature conservation - The nature conservation guideline in the Wiesbaden municipal forest
The near-natural features of its forests, as well as the associated above-average age structure, explicitly of the beech, give the Wiesbaden municipal forest a unique selling point in the front Taunus ridge. Thanks to these historically old forests with a long biotope tradition and habitat continuity, an abundance of deadwood and biotope trees, the Wiesbaden municipal forest bears a great responsibility for the biodiversity of our beech forests. Awareness of the outstanding importance of the beech forest ecosystem and the associated responsibility that Germany has worldwide for its conservation is an integral part of the mission statement for the Wiesbaden municipal forest.
The high proportion of protected areas within the municipal forest - over 50 percent of the area is Natura 2000 and nature conservation areas - is evidence of the high nature conservation relevance of the municipal forest. The majority of these areas are used for forestry purposes and the interests of a wide variety of species are taken into account in their management. For this reason, the focus of nature conservation is on protecting forest species and forest structures. The abundance of species in natural forests is the guiding principle for safeguarding biodiversity.
Protection and utilization
Nature conservation and species protection are integral components of the management of the Wiesbaden municipal forest. The integrative nature conservation concept "Protection and Utilization" aims to improve biodiversity without sacrificing large-scale economic utilization. Forestry measures are coordinated internally and externally with nature conservation concerns. Economic concerns then take a back seat.
A species- and biotope-friendly strategy is based on the following silvicultural components
1. increasing the structural diversity of the managed areas
2. protective measures for sensitive forest species via identification, inventory and individual concepts adapted from this, as well as monitoring
3. additional protection of forest species populations in networked "process protection areas", i.e. areas without timber utilization on more than eight percent of the forest area
4. recording of special forest sites and inclusion in forestry planning
5. inclusion of scientific species studies relevant to nature conservation
6. active reorganization and improvement of forest conditions that are not typical for the location
