Favorite places in Wiesbaden: Laura Pitogo - Schierstein harbor
The Schierstein harbour is the favorite place of Laura Pitogoder, an employee at the tourist information office. A real oasis of relaxation, even for storks!
Dear guests of the city of Wiesbaden,
My favorite place in Wiesbaden is on the water, more precisely on the Rhine, because it is the Schiersteiner Hafen. Schiersteiner Hafen is considered a recreational oasis and is therefore of great importance to Wiesbaden and the surrounding area. The storks living there have probably also recognized this and have many nesting sites around the harbour and in Schierstein. Probably the best-known nesting site is on a disused chimney in Küferstraße. From here, the storks can overlook the entire harbor.
The harbor basin is surrounded by floodplains and meadows, making it an ideal place for a walk or stroll. The paths around the harbor and along the banks of the Rhine are also ideal for running. The harbor promenade is bordered by plane trees, as can also be found on Wilhelmstraße, and is also affectionately known as Schierstein's Riviera due to its Mediterranean flair and the numerous yachts and excursion boats.
The Dyckerhoff Bridge, opened in 1967, not only gives walkers the opportunity to walk around the harbor, but also to enjoy a magnificent view over the Rhine. On one side, you have a bird's eye view of the harbor with all its yachts and boats, and if you look to the other side, you can see the Rhine towards Eltville.
During the Schierstein Harbour Festival, which takes place every year in July around the harbour and the promenade, it is transformed into a 500-metre-long "food alley". A varied program of music and sporting activities, such as the spectacular dragon boat race, as well as a variety of stalls round off the festival and attract not only many Wiesbadeners, but also guests from the Rhine-Main region to tranquil Schierstein every year. The crowning glory of the four-day festival is the traditional fireworks display, which impressively lights up the night sky and the harbor.
The Schiff open-air cinema (Schierstein Film Festival) offers a special kind of experience. In August, current film highlights are shown on a large screen in the open air. Food and drinks can be purchased on site for a cozy movie night.
The Tamara passenger ferry is an almost permanent fixture in Schierstein's harbor scene, shuttling between Schierstein harbor, the Rettbergsaue opposite and Biebrich Castle during the summer months. During a round trip, you are rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view.
A visit to the Schierstein wine tasting stand on Hans-Römer-Platz is a must during your stay at the harbor. Four winegrowers pour their wines from Schierstein vineyards at regular intervals on selected days. Until mid-October, you can enjoy the fantastic view of the harbor and the bridge arch with a glass of wine.
When I get wanderlust, I'm drawn to the water. The Schierstein harbour with its numerous sailing boats and yachts and the harbour promenade give me a vacation feeling. With my camera, which is always a faithful companion, I try to discover the harbor in all its facets.
