Maja Smrekar "Dooms of Love" can be seen at the NKV.

For many years, Maja Smrekar has dedicated herself to researching relationships with non-human actors. Her works operate at the interface of art, science and technology, yet the Slovenian artist's view of the "other" is never distanced and cool-analytical, but always characterized by a deep emotional commitment.

The exhibition focuses on Maja Smrekar's personal imprint and emotional experience of working with her animal collaborators. The show was created in memory of Maja Smrekar's dog Ada, who passed away early this summer.

As part of her Follow Fluxus grant, Maja Smrekar developed a new work that ties in with her 2018 installation and long-term performance "Opus et Domus". In it, the artist spins yarn from her own hair and that of her dogs Ada and Byron. Smrekar has now used this yarn for an embroidery work that picks up on her expanded understanding of family and motherhood. Spinning and embroidery become metaphors of ambivalent female care work, with which Smrekar questions the social and political instrumentalization of the female and non-human, animal body.
