Conversion LindeQuartier

Competition for conversion

A new quarter for attractive forms of living and the establishment of office and commercial uses has been created where until recently halls and storage areas still dominated the townscape.

Based on the results of the urban redevelopment concept, the former owner of the site, Linde AG (founded as "Linde's Eismaschinen" in Wiesbaden in 1879), held an urban development realization competition in 2007. This resulted in statements on the urban structuring of the new quarter with around 600 residential units and its integration into the surrounding area.

The jury therefore decided unanimously in 2007 to award first prize to the competition entry by the Stuttgart team Wulf + Partner together with Möhrle und Partner.

Procedure

The competition was first presented to interested citizens at an initial information event. The introductory colloquium and site visit in September 2007 served to introduce the invited participants to the competition. During the interim colloquium in October 2007, initial design approaches were discussed, specific queries from the participating teams were clarified and the jury made recommendations on how to proceed. The jury, which also included representatives from the city and politics, met in November 2007. Following the jury meeting, the results of the competition were presented to the public as part of an exhibition.

The work makes use of the distinctive high quality and orientation of the location with a striking, open urban structure that gives the LindeQuartier its own identity.

The waterfront panorama at Floßhafen is given a successful address by the point-shaped individual buildings, which close off the slightly angled rows behind them, the green and open spaces in between and the stone promenade, also in the context of the overall current and future development of the banks of the Rhine and Main in Wiesbaden. The stationary traffic will be accommodated in large underground parking units beneath the buildings.

In the further course of the project development (urban land-use planning and building application level), various aspects, such as access via Kostheimer Landstraße, had to be examined in more detail. The division of public and private open and green spaces was also examined in detail in later planning phases.
