Wiesbaden receives DIGITAL Award 2024 for online registration at home

The online service "Online registration at the place of residence with Videoident" was awarded the DIGITAL Award 2024 in the category "Cities and municipalities with over 100,000 inhabitants". The jury, including Federal CIO Dr. Markus Richter, praised the online service, which is unique in Germany. It enables citizens to register their place of residence completely digitally - securely, user-friendly and without media discontinuity.

In addition to the award, there is another welcome innovation: since the beginning of the year, the landlord's confirmation of residence can also be uploaded directly in the process. Previously, this was only possible if the person renting the property had reported the move-in online. Despite the restriction at the time, the online service was used around 1,400 times. The integrated feedback module shows that around 81 percent of users are very satisfied with the service. The new feature means that the online service can be used by all citizens - even if the landlord's confirmation of residence is available in paper form.

"Services for citizens must be geared towards their needs. With the new upload function for the confirmation of residence, we are making registration much easier. The online service can now be used regardless of whether the confirmation is in digital or paper form," says Maral Koohestanian, Head of Smart City, Europe and Public Order at the City of Wiesbaden.

In addition, another online service is available for residence registration with the eID card function. This makes digital registration possible for all citizens - regardless of whether they are EU or non-EU nationals.

The online service was developed in collaboration with the Hessian IT service provider ekom21 and WebID. The video identification procedure enables citizens to register their place of residence in a legally secure manner via video telephony and electronic signature.

Martin Kuban, Managing Director of ekom21, is delighted about the award for the Wiesbaden online service: "Digitization always means modernizing administration. In this case, however, the benefits are not only for the administration, but also for the citizens. Wiesbaden has done great pioneering work here."

Frank S. Jorga, founder and co-CEO of WebID, also emphasizes the relevance of the solution: "We want to make it as easy as possible for citizens. The fact that our video identification is now becoming increasingly popular in the administrative landscape shows that digital services are no longer an experiment, but the future. We look forward to continuing to shape this together."

The introduction of the award-winning online service represents an important step towards the digitalization of administrative services. Together with ekom21, a generic interface is currently being developed that will make it possible to seamlessly connect other digital administrative services with alternative authentication methods.

"With the generic interface, we are taking the next big step: away from individual pilot projects and towards a flexible authentication offering that is fully geared towards the needs of citizens," explains Koohestanian. The city of Wiesbaden is thus consistently pursuing its strategy of modernizing its administration. Receiving the DIGITAL Award is not only a confirmation of the work done so far, but also an incentive for future projects.

"A sustainable city thinks ahead - from the perspective of the people who use its services. This award shows us that we are on the right track with our focus on simple, accessible solutions. Our goal remains clear: an administration that is there for the citizens - and not the other way around," concludes Koohestanian.
